Designing an EdTech platform that allows disadvantaged students to study the Qur’an from anywhere.

My Role

Lead UX/UI Designer

Our Team

Lead Designer, Backend Developer,

SME, Program Manager, Project Owner.

The problem

Our SME noticed that many students around the world, especially in rural and impoverished areas, cannot easily gain access to high quality tutors to learn the Qur’an. We sought to build a platform that connects these tutors to these students for free or at a very low cost.

The solution

We sought to build a platform that connects these tutors to these students for free or at a very low cost. We added some paid options so that tutors can begin to make a living by teaching others the Qur’an.

Step 1

Proof of Concept

This project started as the dream of a sister of mine, our SME: to build an academy where any motivated student could learn Qur’an from high quality teachers. Her goal was to make the Qur’an accessible and available for all.

She thus started her own academy: Ouyoun Academy. Through networking and hard work she managed to grow her school from 5 students to 350 students in just a few months.

Thus the goal came to scale the project. I was recruited to lead the design of the next level for Ouyoun Academy, a platform where anyone could sign up and learn the Qur’an for free. We decided to change Ouyoun’s name to FreeQuranSchool.com: a direct and immediate value proposition for all to see.

Step 2

Modelling the New Web Experience

Ouyoun Academy had a structured curriculum that taught classes in a scheduled manner. However, we decided that this model was not scalable and made the decision to move to a different model. I was tasked with figuring out what the next rendition for Ouyoun could be.

I was inspired by freelance platforms such as Fiverr and ADPList: what if we made a platform where teachers can sign up and teaches classes at their will, and students can browse teachers and find courses that interest them? This removed the need for a curriculum on our end and would entice teachers to come to a website where they can teach to make extra income.

Step 3

Designing in Figma

I’m currently working on designing the website’s webapp experience. I built a lean design system for us in to keep our components organized and scalable. I meet with our developer twice a week to find out if there are any adjustments that I can make to allow him to complete his work as smoothly as possible.
